Loan planning

What should you check before taking a loan?

A practical checklist covering payment affordability, APR, fees, total cost, contract terms and emergency savings.

A suitable loan is not simply the one with the lowest advertised rate. Amount, term, mandatory costs, income stability and contract clauses need to be assessed together.

Borrow only what the goal requires

Calculate the amount genuinely needed rather than the maximum offered. Every extra manat can create extra interest. Test the amount and term in the loan calculator.

Compare the payment with a real budget

Subtract housing, food, transport and other recurring costs from income, then retain a buffer for unexpected events. Use the debt-to-income calculator to see the share already committed to debt.

Check APR and total cost

The nominal rate does not necessarily include origination fees or mandatory insurance. Find the effective annual rate and total repayment in the documents, and compare two scenarios with the loan comparison tool.

Read the risk clauses

  • late interest and penalties;
  • early repayment fees and recalculation;
  • fixed or variable rate terms;
  • mandatory services and insurance;
  • rules for changing a payment date.

Keep an emergency reserve

A reserve covering several months of essential spending can reduce the risk of missed payments after a temporary income change. If any key cost or clause is unclear, pause and obtain the missing information before committing.
